6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing

6 Days 5 Nights

The 6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is a popular trekking adventure for travelers who want to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro through the famous Coca-Cola Route.

Marangu is the only main Kilimanjaro route that offers permanent mountain hut accommodation instead of camping tents. Climbers stay at Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, and Kibo Hut during the journey.

The route passes through tropical rainforest, heathland, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

One of the main advantages of the six-day itinerary is the additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This gives climbers more time to adjust to the increasing altitude compared with the five-day option.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration and park formalities.

After registration, begin trekking through the beautiful rainforest. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, green vegetation, and different bird species. You may also spot blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys.

After several hours of hiking, arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight. If time and weather allow, you can take a short walk to nearby Maundi Crater.

Trekking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Elevation: 1,870 m to 2,720 m

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, continue climbing through the upper rainforest before entering the heath and moorland zone.

The landscape becomes more open, with giant heathers, grasses, and impressive mountain views. On clear days, you can enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Continue along the gradual trail towards Horombo Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Elevation: 2,720 m to 3,720 m

Day 3: Horombo Hut Acclimatization Day

Today is dedicated to acclimatization.

After breakfast, take a guided walk towards Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Hut. Zebra Rocks are famous for their black-and-white striped volcanic appearance.

This activity allows your body to experience a higher altitude before returning to Horombo Hut to sleep at a lower elevation.

After the walk, return to camp for lunch, rest, and preparation for the next stage of the climb.

Trekking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Elevation: Horombo Hut – 3,720 m
Acclimatization Point: Approximately 4,000 m or higher, depending on the selected walk

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, leave Horombo Hut and continue across the alpine desert towards Kibo Hut.

The trail crosses the Saddle, a wide and rocky landscape located between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

As you gain altitude, vegetation becomes limited and temperatures become colder. Walk slowly and drink enough water throughout the journey.

Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Have dinner and rest early in preparation for your summit attempt, which normally begins around midnight.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,703 m

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Horombo Hut

Your summit attempt begins around midnight.

The climb takes you through a steep and challenging trail towards Gilman’s Point at approximately 5,685 metres. From there, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Reaching Uhuru Peak is an unforgettable achievement, as it is the highest point in Africa.

After taking photographs and celebrating your achievement, begin descending to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Trekking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Summit: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the moorland towards Mandara Hut.

Take a short break before continuing through the rainforest towards Marangu Gate.

At the gate, complete the park procedures and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached Uhuru Peak.

Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 20 km
Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,870 m

Why Choose the 6 Days Marangu Route?

The six-day Marangu Route is a good choice for climbers who prefer mountain hut accommodation and a more gradual trekking schedule.

The additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut gives your body more time to adjust to high altitude before continuing towards Kibo Hut.

The route also offers beautiful rainforest scenery, views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, and the experience of crossing the Saddle before the summit attempt.

Mountain Hut Accommodation

Unlike other popular Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu provides permanent mountain huts instead of camping tents.

Climbers stay at:

  • Mandara Hut: Located in the rainforest zone.
  • Horombo Hut: Located in the moorland zone, with views of Mawenzi and Kibo.
  • Kibo Hut: The final accommodation before the summit attempt.

The huts have shared dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds and mattresses. Climbers still need warm sleeping bags because the huts are not heated.

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but the drier months are generally preferred.

January to March: Generally cooler conditions with beautiful mountain views.

June to October: Popular climbing months with generally favourable trekking conditions.

November to December: Possible climbing months, although short rains may affect some trails.

April to May: The main rainy season, when trails can become wet and muddy.

Mountain weather can change quickly, so climbers should prepare for rain, cold nights, and freezing summit temperatures.
