6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing

6 Days 5 Nights

The 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is a popular and scenic adventure for travelers who want to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in a relatively shorter period.

The Machame Route is often called the Whiskey Route because it is more physically demanding than some easier routes. However, it offers beautiful scenery and follows the important climb-high, sleep-low principle through Lava Tower and Barranco Camp.

During this six-day journey, climbers pass through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude Arctic zone before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

The route provides excellent views and passes famous locations including Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with registration at Machame Gate.

After completing the necessary park formalities, begin trekking through the beautiful rainforest. The trail passes through dense vegetation, and you may see or hear different birds and monkeys.

After approximately 5 to 7 hours of trekking, arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.

Trekking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Elevation: Around 1,800 m to 3,020 m

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, continue climbing out of the rainforest towards the moorland zone.

The vegetation gradually becomes less dense as you gain altitude. You will enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Continue towards Shira Camp, located on the Shira Plateau.

Trekking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Elevation: Around 3,020 m to 3,840 m

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is an important day for acclimatization.

The route climbs towards Lava Tower, where you reach a higher altitude before descending again to Barranco Camp.

This climb-high, sleep-low approach helps the body adjust to the altitude.

After reaching Lava Tower, descend towards Barranco Camp and enjoy views of the impressive Barranco Wall.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Highest Point: Lava Tower – approximately 4,630 m
Barranco Camp: Approximately 3,960 m

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, begin climbing the famous Barranco Wall.

The climb can look difficult from a distance, but it is manageable with guidance from your mountain crew.

After reaching the top, continue across the mountain landscape towards Karanga before proceeding to Barafu Camp.

Barafu Camp is your final camp before the summit attempt.

Take time to rest, eat, and prepare your equipment for the night ahead.

Trekking Time: Approximately 8–10 hours
Elevation: Around 3,960 m to 4,640 m

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Mweka Camp

Your summit attempt begins around midnight.

The climb to the summit is the most challenging part of the entire journey. You will trek slowly towards Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.

Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres is an unforgettable achievement and marks the highest point in Africa.

After spending time at the summit for photographs, begin descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Summit: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Trekking Time: Approximately 12–15 hours

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the rainforest towards Mweka Gate.

The trail can be wet and slippery, especially after rainfall, so good hiking boots and trekking poles can be helpful.

At the gate, complete the final park procedures and receive your summit certificate if successful.

Your transfer will then take you back to your hotel in Moshi.

Trekking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Elevation: Around 3,100 m to 1,640 m
