3 Days Mount Meru Hiking Tour in Tanzania
The 3 Days Mount Meru Hiking Tour is an exciting mountain adventure in northern Tanzania, offering beautiful scenery, wildlife encounters, and a rewarding summit experience. Mount Meru stands at 4,566 meters above sea level, making it Tanzania's second-highest mountain. Located inside Arusha National Park, it offers a spectacular trekking experience through different vegetation zones, from tropical rainforest to alpine landscapes. The three-day trek begins at Momella Gate and follows the southern route through Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut before reaching Socialist Peak. Along the way, climbers may encounter wildlife, enjoy views of the surrounding landscape, and, on clear days, see Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a demanding itinerary with limited time for acclimatization. Good physical preparation and previous hiking experience are recommended. 3 Days Mount Meru Hiking Highlights Climb Tanzania's second-highest mountain. Explore the rainforest inside Arusha National Park. Stay overnight at Miriakamba and Saddle huts. Enjoy beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Visit Little Meru during the afternoon acclimatization walk, if conditions allow. Experience the dramatic crater and mountain ridges. Reach Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters. Explore the natural beauty and wildlife of Arusha National Park. Detailed 3 Days Mount Meru Hiking Itinerary Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut After breakfast, your driver will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi and transfer you to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Complete the registration procedures and meet your mountain guide and park ranger. Begin hiking through open grassland and beautiful forest areas toward Miriakamba Hut. During the trek, you may see wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and different bird species. Wildlife sightings depend on natural movements and the conditions along the trail. Follow your ranger's instructions throughout the hike. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before continuing to Miriakamba Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night. Starting altitude: Approximately 1,500 m Camp altitude: Approximately 2,514 m Hiking distance: Approximately 10–14 km, depending on the selected trail Hiking time: Approximately 4–6 hours Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut and Little Meru After breakfast, continue climbing through forest and moorland toward Saddle Hut. The trail becomes steeper as you gain altitude, offering beautiful views of Mount Meru's surrounding landscapes. Arrive at Saddle Hut, located at approximately 3,570 meters. After lunch and some rest, you may take an optional acclimatization walk to Little Meru at approximately 3,820 meters, depending on your condition, weather, and guide's advice. Return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an early rest. Your guide will provide a briefing about the summit attempt, which normally starts during the night. Starting altitude: Approximately 2,514 m Camp altitude: Approximately 3,570 m Hiking distance: Approximately 8 km Hiking time: Approximately 3–5 hours Optional Little Meru hike: Approximately 1–2 hours return Accommodation: Saddle Hut Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak and Descent to Momella Gate The summit attempt usually begins around midnight. After a light meal, start climbing along the steep trail toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point. Continue along the crater ridge toward Socialist Peak, the highest point of Mount Meru at 4,566 meters. The final section can be challenging because of the steep terrain, cold temperatures, and high altitude. Reach the summit around sunrise when weather conditions allow. Enjoy the impressive views of the crater, surrounding landscapes, and Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. After taking photographs and celebrating your achievement, begin the descent to Saddle Hut. Continue down through Miriakamba Hut toward Momella Gate, where your driver will meet you for the transfer back to Arusha or Moshi. This is a very long and physically demanding day, so climbers should be prepared for extended hiking hours. Starting altitude: Approximately 3,570 m Summit altitude: 4,566 m Finishing altitude: Approximately 1,500 m Hiking time: Approximately 10–14 hours or longer Accommodation: No overnight mountain accommodation Best Time to Climb Mount Meru Mount Meru can be climbed throughout the year, but the drier months generally offer better trail conditions and opportunities for clear views. January to March: Generally favourable conditions, with opportunities for good mountain views. June to October: A popular climbing season with generally drier weather. November to December: Short rains may occur, and weather conditions can vary. April to May: The main rainy season, when trails can become muddy and slippery. Why Choose the 3 Days Mount Meru Hike? The three-day Mount Meru trek is a good option for travelers who want to experience a mountain summit adventure within a shorter period. The route offers a combination of rainforest trekking, mountain huts, wildlife viewing, and high-altitude hiking. The optional Little Meru walk also provides an opportunity to gain additional altitude before the summit attempt. However, the three-day schedule is demanding and offers less acclimatization time than the standard four-day Mount Meru climb. Travelers who want a more gradual ascent should consider the four-day itinerary. Why Climb with Focus Kill Adventures?
