All You Need to Know Before Your 3 Days Big Five Safari

About Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a beautiful wildlife destination located beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment. It is known for its groundwater forests, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and the shallow alkaline lake that attracts different bird species.

During your game drive, you may encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, baboons, hippos, and various antelope species. The park is also famous for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are not guaranteed.

Lake Manyara is an excellent place to begin your safari because it offers a different landscape from the open plains of Serengeti.

About Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations and a highlight of any Tanzania safari. Its enormous grasslands, rocky kopjes, seasonal rivers, and woodland habitats support an impressive variety of wildlife.

The park is particularly known for its large lion population, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, and other animals. It is also the main setting for the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife movements.

The location of the migration changes throughout the year. Your safari guide will help select suitable areas for wildlife viewing based on the season and current conditions.

Understanding the Big Five Animals

African Lion

The African lion is one of the most recognisable predators in Tanzania. Lions usually live in prides and can often be seen resting under trees, walking across open grasslands, or searching for prey. Serengeti is particularly famous for its lion population.

African Leopard

Leopards are powerful and elusive cats known for their beautiful spotted coats. They are excellent climbers and often rest in trees or rocky areas. Look carefully around riverine forests and large trees when exploring Serengeti.

African Elephant

Elephants are the largest land animals in the world. They live in family groups and can often be seen feeding, walking, or gathering around water sources. Both Lake Manyara and Serengeti provide opportunities to encounter these impressive animals.

African Buffalo

African buffaloes are strong animals that frequently move in herds. They are commonly found grazing in grasslands and around water sources. They are among the most interesting animals to observe during a game drive.

Black Rhinoceros

The black rhinoceros is one of Africa’s most endangered mammals. Although it is difficult to spot, Tanzania protects important populations, particularly in Ngorongoro Crater. This three-day itinerary does not include Ngorongoro, so seeing a rhino is less likely than on a longer safari that visits the crater.

Day 1: Arusha – Lake Manyara National Park – Karatu

Your safari begins after breakfast in Arusha. Meet your professional driver-guide and travel towards Lake Manyara National Park, enjoying views of the beautiful countryside and the Great Rift Valley escarpment along the way.

You may pass through Mto wa Mbu, a lively agricultural town known for its local markets, fresh produce, and cultural diversity. Depending on your schedule, you can make a short stop before continuing to the national park.

Upon arrival, begin your game drive through Lake Manyara’s different habitats. Explore the groundwater forest, where you may encounter baboons and monkeys moving through the trees. Continue towards the open grasslands and lakeside areas, where elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and hippos may be seen.

Keep an eye on the trees for the famous tree-climbing lions. The park also offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, with flamingos and other waterbirds appearing when lake conditions are suitable.

Enjoy a picnic lunch during the day before continuing your afternoon game drive. Later, leave the park and travel to your accommodation in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu.

Day 2: Karatu – Ngorongoro Conservation Area – Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast, depart for Serengeti National Park through the beautiful Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The journey offers spectacular scenery as you travel through the highlands, with opportunities to enjoy views of the Ngorongoro landscape. Continue towards the Serengeti, where the scenery gradually changes into vast open plains dotted with acacia trees and rocky kopjes.

After completing the park entry formalities, proceed towards the central Serengeti, particularly the Seronera region. This area is known for its permanent water sources, which attract a wide variety of wildlife throughout the year.

Enjoy an en-route game drive while searching for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, and other animals. The Seronera Valley is also an important area for spotting leopards, which are sometimes seen resting in trees along river systems.

Enjoy your packed lunch at a designated picnic site before continuing with an afternoon game drive. Depending on your travel dates, you may also explore areas where the Great Wildebeest Migration is moving.

In the late afternoon, drive to your accommodation in Serengeti for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Serengeti National Park.

Day 3: Serengeti National Park – Arusha

Wake up early for breakfast or a packed breakfast before heading out for a morning game drive across the Serengeti plains.

The early morning is an excellent time to explore the park because many animals are active after the night. Search for lions returning from hunting, leopards moving through their territories, elephants feeding, and herds of wildebeest and zebras grazing across the plains.

Your guide will select the most suitable wildlife areas according to the time available and current animal movements. Enjoy opportunities for wildlife photography and learn more about the Serengeti ecosystem.

After your morning exploration, begin the journey back towards Arusha. Depending on your departure schedule and road conditions, you may enjoy additional wildlife viewing along the route.

Arrive in Arusha in the afternoon or evening, marking the end of your 3 Days Tanzania Big 5 Safari Serengeti.

End of Safari: Arusha.

Accommodation During the Safari

For this three-day safari, accommodation is arranged around the selected route to make your journey comfortable and practical.

Night 1 – Karatu: Stay in a comfortable lodge or tented camp near Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro highlands.

Night 2 – Serengeti: Enjoy a safari lodge or tented camp within or near Serengeti National Park, providing convenient access to wildlife-viewing areas.

Accommodation can be arranged at budget, mid-range, or luxury level depending on your preferences and budget.

Tanzania offers wildlife experiences throughout the year, but the best time depends on your preferred safari conditions and interest in the Great Wildebeest Migration.

June to October: This is the dry season and a popular time for wildlife viewing. Animals often gather around available water sources, and vegetation is generally thinner.

January to March: The southern Serengeti and Ndutu region are important areas during the wildebeest calving season. This period offers opportunities to observe large herds and predator activity.

November to December: The short rains bring fresh vegetation and green landscapes. Wildlife viewing remains possible, and the scenery is attractive for photography.

April to May: These months generally receive heavier rainfall. The parks become lush and green, although some roads may be more challenging.

For a short three-day safari, it is important to plan your travel dates carefully because the migration may be far from the central Serengeti depending on the season.
